Frozen and Freeze-Dried Raw Diet FAQ

What makes Green Juju’s food unique?
Three main things make Green Juju’s food unique:

  1. We use primarily organ meat.
We reduce or eliminate muscle meat and replace it with heart, which is much more nutrient-dense. This is great for maintaining your pet’s heart, liver and kidney health over time because the nutrients support your dog or cat's own organs.
  2. No synthetic vitamins or minerals.
By using these nutrient-dense organs, we can meet the majority of nutritional needs without using synthetic vitamins or minerals. We simply add a dark leafy green and kelp to fill in Vitamin K1 and iodine.
  3. No fish oil!
Fish oil can be a common trigger for a lot of pets. We source proteins well — grass-fed, pasture-raised, wild-caught — so they have a naturally anti-inflammatory omega 3:6 ratio.

How much food does my dog need?
This will vary depending on activity level and individual needs, but check out our frozen and freeze dried feeding calculators for a guideline.

Can I lightly cook the frozen food?
We recommend feeding our frozen raw food as is. While we do double grind our food and the bone is very small, it is possible for larger pieces of bone to get through the grinder and end up in the food. This could create a potential hazard if cooked and hardened. A great alternative is to pour hot water in the bowl of food, let it sit for a few minutes then drain out. This is a safe way to gently warm the food.

Is Green Juju’s food line complete and balanced for puppies?
The food is complete and balanced for puppies and dogs of any age. The easiest way to feed it to puppies is to feed the amount that their estimated adult weight will be. Or you can double the amount associated with their current weight until they become an adult. Either way works!

Are Green Juju Diets safe to feed to pregnant dogs?
Yes, just feed them up to double the usual recommended amount when they are pregnant.

How many cups are in a bag of freeze-dried?
There are roughly 8.3 cups in every bag.

What is the ash content in the freeze-dried and frozen food?
Ash represents the overall mineral content in the food. Some veterinarians and pet parents with special dietary needs ask for this number.

Freeze-dried:
Bison - 8.82%, Beef - 8.80%, Pork - 8.52%, Lamb - 4.02%, Goat - 8.71%, Rabbit with Duck Liver - 9.22%

Frozen:
Beef - 1.34%, Pork - 0.96%, Lamb - 1.34%, Goat - 2.72%, Rabbit with Duck Liver - 2.6%

Can Green Juju Recipes be fed to cats as well?
Yes! Green Juju recipes are complete and balanced for cats and dogs.

What are the feeding recommendations for cats?

FREEZE-DRIED:

5 pounds - 1.12 oz - 8/10 cup - (150 calories)

10 pounds - 1.87 oz  - 1 cup - (250 calories)

15 pounds - 2.63 oz - 1.5 cups - (350 calories)

20 pounds - 3.38 oz - 2.25 cups - (450 calories)

FROZEN:

5 pounds - 4 oz - (150 calories)

10 pounds - 6.75 oz (250 calories)

15 pounds - 9.5 oz - (350 calories)

20 pounds - 12 oz - (450 calories)

Why isn’t the food labeled for cats?
When we launched the food, we heard that retailers preferred separate foods for cats and dogs. We are a very small company and couldn’t do both lines at the same time. We launched the dog, but have been overwhelmed with how many customers are giving our food to cats or using the same food for both cats and dogs in the household. We are looking to make these packaging changes in the future!

Once opened, how long does a bag of freeze-dried food stay fresh?
When stored properly, our products can last three months. It must be sealed and stored in a cool, dry place.

I've heard that secreting organs, such as liver and kidney, should be limited to 5% of the diet, but I know that these along with heart are the primary organs that are used for your food. Can you help me bridge this gap?

Typically, the reason you hear that is because people are worried about fat-soluble vitamin toxicities — these include vitamins A & D. However, when foods naturally contain vitamins A, D and K2, they help to metabolize each other and prevent toxicity.

The reason our ingredient list is so short is because we use heart which is more nutrient dense than muscle meat. We also use more liver and kidney, which are nature’s multivitamins. This results in 99% of the vitamins coming from the organs which is the most bioavailable source.

What kind of vitamin E preservative do you use? And is it synthetic?

The vitamin E in all of our products is mixed tocopherols, which are derived from food. This is the most natural, food-based way to preserve foods.

Our preservative is also non-GMO. We’ve found this makes a big difference for sensitive animals who have not tolerated other freeze-dried products.

Whole Food Supplements FAQ

I’m not going to use the whole container (blends, goat’s milk, bone broth, pastes or mushroom probiotic) fast enough. What can I do to not waste?

You can thaw and refreeze into smaller containers. Ice cube trays are great for this!

The feeding recommendations on the frozen blends seems like a lot. Do I need to use that much?

No! We say some is better than none. Those feeding recommendations are intended for dogs on a pure dry commercial diet. We go by “the plop method” — big dog = big plop, medium dog = medium plop, small dog = small dog plop. This is real whole food so the body will use what it needs and safely get rid of the rest. You can’t overdo it. The best indicator of finding the right amount for your pup will be based on the consistency of their stool!

Should I stick with the same frozen blend — Just Greens, Bailey’s Blend or Golden Blend?

Ideally, we suggest rotating between the three. The strongest indicator of a healthy microbiome is the diversity of plants consumed. By rotating the three blends, you’ll be feeding 17 plants in a month!

If you are dealing with cancer or yeast and need a low-carb diet, Bailey’s and Just Greens are below 3% net carb. The Golden Blend is less than 6% net carb.

The last consideration is the protein. Just Greens has bison bone broth, Bailey’s Blend has turkey bone broth and Golden Blend has Duck bone broth.

If your pet has any sensitivities to those proteins, you’ll want to work around that. We also have the Just Greens Freeze Dried which does not have a bone broth at all so no protein considerations.

How long do each of the supplements last in the fridge?

Just Greens, Bailey’s Blend*, Golden Blend = 5-7 days in the fridge

Bison, Duck and Venison bone broths = 5-7 days in the fridge

Lua’s Golden Paste and Bam’s Beets = 30 days in the fridge

Mushroom Probiotic = 30 days in the fridge

Raw Goat’s Milk = 14 days in the fridge

*Bailey’s Blend will ferment itself after 8 days in the fridge. Once fermented, it can last up to 22 days. Must transfer to a glass container as the paper will degrade after 5-7 days.

Help! My dog ate the oxygen pack! Are they toxic?

Our oxygen packs are non-toxic and made by the brand OxyFree. Monitor your dog’s water intake as it may increase. The ASPCA website and your veterinarian can provide more information.

This container looks different than the last one I bought. Did something change?

We are still a small manufacturer and produce in small batches using real whole food. It is common to see variations in the color and appearance of the product based on a number of factors. This is a good thing because it means we are using real food! This applies to our blends, fermented pastes, bone broths and mushroom probiotic.

Does your Raw Goat’s Milk have probiotics? I don’t see any on the label.

Yes! Raw goat’s milk has over 200 strains of naturally occurring probiotics. The probiotics are not listed on the label because they will vary based on the time of year and the goat’s diet. This is the best way to get probiotic diversity — just like nature intended!

What is the difference between a mushroom broth and mushroom probiotic?

Mushroom broth - This is when you cook mushrooms at high temperatures and/or pressure in water to release nutrients into the broth.

Mushroom Probiotic - Our mushroom probiotic is a raw mushroom brine, which is completely different. We soak mushrooms in water and sea salt. During this process, the naturally existing probiotics and yeast grow and eat the mushroom's carbohydrate content. This produces a lot of probiotics and releases the mushroom nutrients because the bacteria metabolize them. This process allows us to keep everything in a raw food state and bring out and enhance all the bacteria and nutrient properties.

Quality Sourcing FAQ

Where does Green Juju source its proteins?

  • Beef - Grass-fed from the Pacific Northwest
  • Bison - Grass-fed from Colorado and Wyoming
  • Pork - Pasture-raised from the Pacific Northwest
  • Goat - Grass-fed and/or wild-harvested from Australia
  • Lamb - Grass-fed from Australia
  • Rabbit - Free range in open barns from Spain
  • Duck - Free-range with outdoor access from California

Why aren’t all of your proteins grass-fed?

Not all animals consume solely grass. The ones that do — like beef and bison — are grass-fed. Some animals like pigs need grain. We source to the highest-quality standard of every animal’s dietary needs.

Food Safety FAQ

Do you use high-pressure processing?

Yes! High-pressure processing is an effective way to eliminate potential e-coli, listeria and salmonella, while keeping the food raw.

What products are high-pressure processed?

Anything with ground meat is high-pressure processed. This includes our whole food bites and complete and balanced frozen and freeze-dried Raw Diet Recipes. Our trainers and supplements do not use HPP.

What is your specific process for high-pressure processing?

HPP is done for 180 seconds at 87,000 PSI.

How is the food still raw after high-pressure processing?

The data shows the enzymes are still active, the background microflora is alive, digestibility is the same, and no heat is applied. All of these in conjunction lead us to the conclusion that HPP'd food is safe and raw.

Find out more here

HPP technology has changed over the last 10 years and is consistently our best option for safe raw food.

Why is the brown and/or is it cooked or thermally processed?

The brown color is a result of the double grind that we do. The food is ground, then goes through high-pressure processing, and then is ground again. Discoloration occurs any time food is exposed to oxygen (twice in this case). This doesn't affect the nutrient profile!

I see ice crystals on the food. Is it freezer-burned?

The ice crystals are a good thing! Our patties and sliders are quick-frozen in a nitrogen tunnel, which locks in nutrients better. This faster freeze produces ice crystals. The same can be said of seafood sold for human consumption!
