5 Changes I Noticed When I Started Adding Fresh Food to My Dog’s Bowl

By Kandice Brending

Growing up, our family dogs were always fed kibble. Twice a day, my dad would dump a heaping cup of those crunchy brown pellets into a bowl, and our black Lab would happily scarf it down at an alarming pace.

He seemed to love it, and I honestly never considered that dogs could eat anything other than kibble and the occasional table scrap.

That changed five years ago when I brought home Cookie, my Anatolian Shepherd mix.

Cookie is nothing like the black Labs I grew up with. He is sassy, independent, and definitely NOT eager to please. Seemingly in alignment with his general demeanor, his stomach is also incredibly sensitive.

For three years, I struggled to find a diet that worked for Cookie. I spent countless hours researching the best dog food for sensitive stomachs, obsessively checking ingredient panels, and cleaning up carpet stains. A few of those carpets did not survive.

Finally, I had enough.

I knew I needed to start looking beyond kibble.

Why I Started Adding Fresh Food to My Dog’s Kibble

When I was first introduced to Green Juju, I had been what I like to call “raw-curious” for quite some time. Everything I had read about raw feeding and fresh food for dogs was intriguing, but my budget didn’t really allow me to dive in headfirst.

Then I was given the opportunity to do some videography for Green Juju, where I learned more about fresh feeding, whole-food nutrition, and the idea that feeding fresh doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

That was truly the catalyst for where Cookie is now in his health journey.

Instead of switching to a completely raw diet overnight, I started small. Here are the five biggest changes I noticed when I began adding fresh food to my dog’s kibble.

1. His Stool Became Firmer and More Consistent

Cookie’s stomach problems were very apparent in his stool quality. Almost every day, no matter what protein source or kibble brand I fed him, followed the same cycle.

His first poop would be a little soft. His second would be softer. And his third? Let’s just say it wasn't exactly easy to pick up with a poop bag.

Also, why was he pooping so much?!

The first fresh food I began incorporating into Cookie’s diet was Green Juju’s signature vegetable topper, Just Greens.

The changes were noticeable within just a few days. Cookie’s poop became firmer and easier to pick up. I would celebrate every time I could cleanly pick it up, leaving no trace of Cookie’s tummy troubles behind.

I had discovered the secret to happiness: solid poop.

It was also my first realization that adding even a small amount of fresh, whole food to kibble could make a noticeable difference for my dog.

2. He Became More Excited About Mealtimes

Once I had seen the difference a small amount of fresh food could make for Cookie, there was no going back. I wanted to see what else was out there.

Still not ready to risk our newfound solid-poop happiness, I didn’t want to add raw meat just yet. After learning about raw goat’s milk, it seemed like the next logical step in our fresh feeding journey.

The biggest change I saw?

Cookie actually seemed to enjoy his food.

Before adding fresh food, I assumed Cookie was simply one of those dogs who didn’t get excited about mealtimes. He would graze on his kibble throughout the day, sometimes never finishing the bowl.

In hindsight, I probably should have realized he wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about kibble when he would dump it onto the floor and stare at me afterward.

Thankfully, that stopped when goat’s milk, or “gravy” as we called it, was added.

As soon as the gravy started flowing, Cookie was chowing down just like our lovable Labs used to when I was a kid.

Adding fresh food to kibble wasn't just about nutrition for us. It made his bowl more exciting, too.

3. His Poops Got Smaller

At this point, I was hooked on fresh feeding. It was time to bring in the raw recipes.

Financially, feeding my 110-pound Shepherd 100% raw food simply wasn’t in the cards. Instead, I replaced about one-third of his calories with Green Juju’s limited-ingredient Goat Recipe.

Goat was also a protein Cookie hadn't been regularly exposed to, which made it an appealing option as I carefully expanded his diet.

After a few days of this new raw-and-kibble mix, I noticed what was perhaps the most exciting change of all:

His poops got smaller.

Picking up dog poop is not a particularly fun task to begin with, but when you have a dog who weighs as much as a teenager, there are a lot of anxious questions happening in your head:

Will I be able to pick this up in one go, or is it a two-bagger? Is anyone watching me struggle to fit my whole hand around this giant pile right now? WHY IS HE POOPING SO MUCH?

Thankfully, poop pickup became a much calmer event after swapping some of his kibble for raw food.

For Cookie, even replacing about one-third of his kibble with raw food made a noticeable difference in the amount of waste I was picking up.

And most importantly, I didn't have to feed 100% raw to feel like fresh food was making a difference.

4. I Noticed Changes in His Overall Wellness

After a couple of months on our new feeding routine, I started noticing changes beyond Cookie’s digestion.

Before adding fresh food, Cookie wasn't obviously overweight, but he definitely had a little extra padding.

Today, he’s much leaner. His eyes look brighter, his coat feels softer, and he has plenty of energy for our daily adventures.

I love walking with him around the neighborhood and hearing, “You have such a beautiful dog!” from enamored onlookers.

And yes, this actually happens frequently.

While every dog is different, seeing Cookie thrive made me realize how much more intentional I could be about what I put into his bowl.

5. I Changed the Way I Think About Feeding My Dog

The last big change I noticed after incorporating fresh food wasn't actually a change in Cookie.

It was a change in me.

I never could have predicted how much this journey would bring me closer to him.

I think it’s easy to take our pets for granted. We go about our days dealing with human problems while they patiently wait for us to look their way, even for just a few minutes. Mealtimes can become an afterthought: a quick scoop of food into a bowl before moving on to the next thing.

That changed for me when I started thinking more intentionally about how I could help Cookie thrive.

I now put more thought into everything in his life, from the food he eats to the places he sees and the experiences he has. I’m more present with him on walks, and I take more time to truly enjoy the moments I get to spend with him.

Fresh Feeding Doesn’t Have to Be All or Nothing

Today, two years into our fresh feeding journey, Cookie is still thriving on his kibble-and-raw mix.

Soft poop incidents are few and far between, and he’s even gotten to the point where we can rotate through different proteins for more variety.

And it all started with just a scoop of Just Greens.

One of the biggest things Cookie taught me is that feeding fresh food doesn't have to mean completely abandoning kibble or switching to a 100% raw diet.

For us, starting small made fresh feeding approachable, affordable, and sustainable.

A scoop of vegetables. A splash of goat’s milk. A portion of raw food. There are plenty of ways to add fresh, whole foods to a dog’s existing diet.

I’ll forever be thankful to Green Juju for showing me how even some fresh food added to a kibble diet can make a meaningful difference in my dog’s life.

Cookie is my best friend, and I owe it to him to give him the best life I can.
