Just Add Life: The Philosophy Behind Everything We Make

It Started Simple

“Add some life to the bowl” is a phrase we’ve used at Green Juju since the beginning. It’s become our tagline, but honestly, it’s the whole guiding principle for how I think about feeding pets.

That phrase first came to me during a really difficult time with my dog, Bailey, over ten years ago. She was diagnosed with a rare joint tumour, options were slim, and I remember feeling overwhelmed and unsure what to do next.

I didn’t have all the answers, but I kept coming back to one thought: she needs life in her bowl.

Not just calories. Real, whole ingredients that felt fresh, vibrant, and alive. So I started with leafy greens.

That little homemade blend eventually became Just Greens and, over time, Green Juju itself. But even all these years later, that original idea still shapes everything we do.

When I think about pet nutrition, I always ask myself “What can we add here that brings more life?” Sometimes that means dark leafy greens rich in phytonutrients, or omega-3s from whole, wild-caught sardines. Sometimes it’s living probiotics, mushrooms, bone broth, or fresh vegetables.

It’s always about finding ways to support the body with real, nourishing foods that help pets thrive.

Life Starts in the Soil

Truly nourishing food begins long before the ingredients ever make it into the bowl. It starts in the soil.

Whenever I can, I love to visit the farms we work with, including Lancaster Farm Fresh Co-op in Pennsylvania, and there’s a feeling you get when you walk onto land that’s being cared for properly. You can smell the rich living soil. You can see the vibrant colors in the greens growing from it. Everything feels energized and alive in a really tangible way.

Lancaster Farm Fresh works with a network of small regenerative organic farms that focus on rebuilding soil health naturally through composting, biodiversity, and careful stewardship instead of relying on synthetic chemicals or synthetic shortcuts.

I love that approach because truly healthy soil is alive. It’s full of microbial activity, nutrients, and energy that eventually gets transferred into the plants themselves. That connection between soil, plants, animals, and people is something I think about a lot. You can feel the difference when food is grown with that kind of intention.

One thing I really appreciate about Lancaster is that they talk just as much about the people caring for the land as they do the soil itself. Because it’s true. Regenerative farming takes intention, patience, and people who genuinely believe in nurturing the ecosystem they’re part of.

That kind of care creates better food, and I truly believe our pets benefit from that care too.

Why We Only Choose Organic

When life is present at every step from the soil, to the plants, to the bowl, you’re creating something genuinely nourishing.

That’s a huge part of why organic sourcing matters so much to us at Green Juju. Organic farming goes beyond avoiding pesticides or GMOs. It focuses on building living soil ecosystems that transfer vitality into every plant. We want to support growers who are creating foods that feel as close to nature as possible and caring for the land in a thoughtful, sustainable way.

And for me, that’s what “add some life to the bowl” really means.

Adding Life, Made Easy

We want feeding fresh to feel joyful, nourishing, and possible, because I truly believe some fresh food is always better than none.

That’s the whole idea behind our Vegetable Blends. Each blend is designed to bring something fresh, functional, and living into the bowl in a simple, doable way.

You don’t have to overhaul your dog’s entire diet overnight to make a meaningful difference. Sometimes simply adding a little “plop” of fresh vegetables to the bowl is an amazing place to start.

Bringing it Back to the Bowl

Every decision we make at Green Juju, from farm partnerships to sourcing standards, comes back to one question:

How do we bring more life into the bowl?

For me, the answer has become pretty simple too: Work with nature, not against it. Choose ingredients grown with care, in living soil, by people who truly believe in what they’re doing.

For our pets those small additions of real, nourishing food end up making a really big difference.
